President's Message - October 7, 2024

From the President:

The Board would like to thank those of you who joined us for National Night Out last Tuesday.  We had a great turn out of residents, and everyone appeared to have a fun time.  We especially appreciated the participation of Mayor Van Johnson, City Manager Jay Melder, and Chief of Police Lenny Gunther who have been extremely busy bringing the city back after the storm. The Mayor and the Chief were still living without power in their homes which I know many of you experienced as well.

Docents for the Holiday Tour of Homes

The Holiday Tour of Homes and Inns is Saturday, December 14th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. We are looking for docents to provide information to tour goers at eight homes, one inn and one museum home. There also are openings at Tour Headquarters (where tour goers pick up their tickets), and as street guides.

As usual we have an incentive for your efforts: everyone who signs up receives a free ticket to take the tour, so sign up with a friend or partner and make a day of it!

Please help us manage the sign-up system by including the names and contact information for each docent. We ask that you do not hold positions by putting your name repeatedly in slots.  All docents must speak English.

If you have questions, please contact Joyce McDonald, Chair, Holiday Tour of Homes Committee at: HolidayTour@savannahdna.org

Preservation Alert

This Wednesday, October 9 at 1 pm the Historic District Board of Review will be hearing from two developers who want to build six-story hotels in the downtown community.  The first one is at 20-24 E Oglethorpe Ave (the current Seabolt Realty Office).  You can review their plans here.

The second location is 301 Tatnall Street (the vacant lot is at W Liberty Ave and Tatnall.)  The developer here is also attempting to build a six-story hotel.  You can review these plans here.

We do not believe either of these hotels enhance are community or are needed.  Both are much too large for where they are to be built.

We are asking residents to send an email to Jonathon Mellon, Metropolitan Planning Commission at mellonj@thempc.org stating your opposition to these large hotel developments.  Please have any opposition emails sent in by 5 pm tomorrow, Tuesday, October 8 for inclusion into the record for each of these developments.

DNA Activities in 2025

As we start planning for 2025 the Board is looking for supporters who would be interested in sponsoring a DNA related event next year.

We are looking for sponsors for the following planned activities:

  • St. Patrick’s Day Parade Float

  • Annual Picnic in May

  • National Night Out

  • Monthly Meeting Social Period

If you would be willing to sponsor an event, please let us know at info@savannahdna.org
