From the President:
Some updates and alerts on upcoming events:
Octane Bar and Lounge
You may recall that there was a homicide outside of the Octane Bar and Lounge, 35 Whitaker, on August 30. Another shooting occurred there on August 24. Due to these shootings, the city suspended the alcohol license of this business and ordered them to “Show Cause” as to why they should be allowed to retain their license.
After several delays, the City Council held a hearing concerning the license on Thursday, November 7. As a result, the City Council suspended the alcohol license until January 1, 2025, issued a six-month probation period, and ordered the owner to enter into a Good Neighbor Agreement with the DNA. The owner was also instructed to meet with the police department monthly to discuss any open issues.
DNA will be meeting with the owner to negotiate the terms of our agreement. I have already met with several business owners in the area that have been affected by the violence and problems originating from this bar and lounge. We will keep you advised as negotiations progress.
Every Woman’s Marathon
Just a reminder that this Saturday, November 16 Every Woman’s Marathon race will begin downtown at 7 am. Expect some streets to be closed from 7-10 am in our community.
Monthly Meeting
Just a reminder that our next monthly meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday, November 19, beginning with the social period at 5:30 pm. The meeting will begin at 6 pm. We will once again be meeting at the Coastal Georgia Center, 305 Fahm St. Our presenters at the meeting are city representatives Faye DiMassimo, Director of Planning and Economic Development; Bridget Lidy, Director, Planning and Urban Design; and Jessica Baldwin, Preservation Officer. We have asked them to speak about the development currently planned for the downtown community and surrounding area. Additionally, they will provide information about the newly created position for historic preservation.
